Keynote: Ensuring an Effective Acoustic Environment for Learning

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

For the past 70 years, the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf has been servicing students with hearing loss. We support these students within their learning environment and provide teachers with strategies to ensure that the delivery of their messages is accessible. Teachers can meet the needs of all students by presenting lessons in different ways and using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. Ensuring an effective acoustic environment for learning is part of UDL. While it is crucial for those with hearing loss, it benefits all learners in the classroom.

In this presentation, we will provide information related to the importance of optimal access to hearing (awareness of hearing fluctuations), analyze acoustics in the classroom and provide strategies for optimal delivery of the message. Participants will have an opportunity to experience what it is like to be in poor acoustic environments with unclear auditory information and reflect on what possible changes can be put in place to promote equal access in the classroom. Participants will also be equipped with the knowledge to implement the necessary environmental modifications for the benefit of their learners.
