The Power of Pedagogy

Giving up 20% of class time, when implemented properly, can be a transformative learning opportunity for both the students and their teacher. Students are free to explore, inquire, learn, try, fail, reflect and share. For this project, students must push beyond their levels of comfort and delve into new learning experience. Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from class to home, and classwork becomes more interactive as students practice applying new knowledge. Simply said, students watch video lessons individually and then do their "homework" with a teacher. The teacher has more time to work with students individually in class, and students take more ownership of their learning. In this workshop, teachers will learn about one teacher's flipped secondary math classroom.

Participants will receive an overview of several cooperative learning strategies and leave with a basic understanding of how to positively engage students using something called "Home Teams".
